WAUKEGAN, ILLINOIS -- Yaskawa Electric America, Inc. expanded the original functions of its Sigma Series AC servo drives with the announcement of the new Sigma II Series. This new line improves on the high performance Sigma Series in applications requiring further mechanical enhancement.

With a total of 32 different types ranging from 30 watts to 15 kilowatts, the Sigma II line can be applied to a wide variety of industrial applications, including but not limited to: lathes, machining centers, industrial robots, metal processing and winding machines.

Features of the Sigma II Series AC servo drives include: high response with load frequency characteristics of 400Hz; high-resolution serial encoder (16 or 17 bits); a maximum rotation speed of 5,000rpm on the SGMAH, SGMPH and SGMSH/UH types; settling time that is reduced to one-third of conventional models; and smooth operation at low speed (due to reduced motor speed ripple). Yaskawa's new technologies, such as speed observer control, are integrated into the Sigma II Series to achieve higher performance. Amplifiers are also available with a choice of 200 – 230VAC or 380 – 480VAC power requirements.

The Sigma II line is easy to install and operate. Auto-tuning allows for fast setup of the new drives, while on-line auto-tuning actually adjusts tuning parameters while the machine operates. The servo amplifier reads the servo motor ID, indicating type and capacity, and automatically sets parameters. There is also increased flexibility for expanded variations and functions. Torque, speed or position control can be digitally selected simply by changing a parameter.

For improved ease of maintenance, the main circuit and control circuit power supplies have been separated. Terminals for external regenerative resistors are provided. The Sigma II Series conforms to CE and UL standards and has enhanced environmental protection. The SGMAH has an IP55 protective enclosure, and the SGMAH and SGMPH have improved vibration resistance. DC reactor connection terminals are equipped as standard for power supply high harmonic countermeasures.

Customers also have the option of expanding the Sigma II motor capabilities with incremental encoders or absolute encoders, brakes or gearboxes. Use of a serial encoder increases reliability and reduces wiring. With an absolute encoder, 15 wires are reduced to seven, and with an incremental encoder, nine wires are reduced to five.
