Although concepts like data acquisition, test, and measurement can be surprisingly difficult to define completely, most computer users, engineers, and scientists agree there are several common elements in systems used today for these functions. For the sake of simplicity, this handbook uses the term "data acquisition and control" broadly to refer to a variety of hardware and software solutions capable of making measurements and controlling external processes.
