San Jose-based company is sole foreign recipient of annual award.

Novellus Systems Inc. (Nasdaq:NVLS), the productivity and innovation leader in advanced deposition and surface preparation processes for the global semiconductor industry, today announced that the company has received the "Best Supplier" award for 2000 from Samsung Electronics, the leading dynamic random access memory (DRAM) chipmaker in the world and fourth-largest semiconductor company. The award was presented to Novellus CEO Richard S. Hill by Samsung President and CEO Yoon-Woo Lee in a ceremony at Samsung's Kiheung, Korea plant on Apr. 6, 2001. Novellus was the only non-Korean supplier to be recognized by Samsung with the "Best Supplier" award for Year 2000.

Samsung presents the "Best Supplier" award each year to those suppliers that meet a wide range of performance criteria. Candidates are evaluated on process-quality metrics such as device yield, process spec-out rate and wafer-run defect rate; corrective action and quality-improvement records; low cost of ownership (CoO) and production-cost savings; ability to meet scheduled system shipments; and overall technical performance. A supplier's ability to work cooperatively with Samsung is also an important consideration.

"Samsung is one of the world leaders in semiconductor manufacturing," said Mr. Nak Kyung Chung, president of Novellus Systems Korea. "Being recognized by them for our commitment to innovation and top quality support strongly validates our position as a top-tier capital equipment company. We are highly honored to receive this recognition."

The Year 2000 award is the first Samsung "Best Supplier" tribute received by Novellus, although it has garnered numerous awards from the company in the past. Novellus provides Samsung with a wide range of chemical vapor deposition (CVD) equipment and physical vapor deposition (PVD) equipment, including SEQUEL® plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition systems (PECVD), ALTUS® tungsten CVD systems, SPEED® high density plasma (HDP) CVD systems, SABRE® copper electrofill systems and INOVA® physical vapor deposition (PVD) systems for use in building their memory and non-memory products. Novellus' sales to Samsung were a substantial contributor to its revenues in 2000.
