Bob Havemann joins Novellus Systems as research & development vice president
At Novellus, Dr. Havemann's job as head of R&D will be to explore new technologies that help broaden the company's product portfolio, searching in particular for "disruptive" processes that can accelerate the industry's semiconductor technology roadmap and result in more powerful and cheaper devices. While the company's research efforts are initially focused on BEOL (back end of line) interconnect technology, and ultra low-k dielectric films in particular, R&D has a mandate to look beyond Novellus' current emphasis on deposition and surface preparation applications to determine future industry needs and begin selective internal development in these areas. As vice president of R&D, Dr. Havemann's wide experience base in semiconductor science will significantly aid Novellus as the company expands its focus beyond the areas of deposition and surface preparation.
"Bob Havemann's work at Texas Instruments and SEMATECH has given him an extraordinarily broad view of the industry and the technical challenges we face in building advanced semiconductor devices," said Drs. Wilbert van den Hoek, Novellus' executive vice president of integration and advanced development. "His perspective will add significantly to our technical depth and understanding of semiconductor manufacturing processes beyond our current expertise in deposition and surface preparation. Bob is also particularly knowledgeable in the area of unit process integration, a plus for Novellus, given the breadth of our ongoing activities in the Damascus Alliance Customer Integration Center (CIC)."
Dr. Havemann holds bachelor's and master's degrees in electrical engineering from Rice University, and a doctorate in electrical engineering from the University of Colorado. He is a co-founder and former general chair of the International Interconnect Technology Conference (IITC), and is currently local arrangements co-chair of the VLSI Technology Symposium. He has participated in and/or served in leadership roles with the Interconnect Technology Roadmap for Semiconductors (ITRS), the Semiconductor Research Corporation (SRC) Interconnect Science Technical Advisory Board and the Device Interconnect Technology Committee of the International Electron Devices Meeting (IEDM).
Dr. Havemann is a member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), the American Physical Society, and the American Vacuum Society. He holds 61 issued patents with an additional 31 pending, and has authored or co-authored over 100 technical publications and presentations, including 5 book chapters and one edited book.
Dr. Havemann started at Novellus on May 7, reporting to Drs. van den Hoek.
