The 5800 is the latest member of PHI's 5000 series of multi-technique ESCA systems. Early 5000 systems set the standards for performance of traditional ESCA systems. The 5800 system contains two significant enhancements over the previous generation. A new ion gun, the Model 06-350, enhances depth profiling capabilities by providing increased ion current density from 500 to 5,000V. Performance and ease-of-use on insulating samples has been increased with the combination of a new cold cathode based electron neutralizer and a new low energy ion neutralizer. Standard options include: an x-ray monochromator, a LaB6 based electron gun for AES, a static SIMS attachment, ISS, and automation of the sample stage. Four hundred 5000 series systems are in use in laboratories around the world.
