Power Integrations Introduces 1700 V GaN Switch-Mode Power Supply IC, Setting A New Benchmark In Gallium Nitride Technology
San Jose, CA ( BUSINESS WIRE ) - Power Integrations (NASDAQ: POWI ), the leader in integrated circuits for high-voltage power conversion, today announced the latest addition to its InnoMux™-2 family of single-converter, multi-output, independently controllable, offline power supply ICs . The new devices feature the industry's first 1700 V gallium nitride switches manufactured using PI's proprietary PowiGaN™ technology. The 1700 V rating advances the state-of-the-art in GaN power devices, already established in Power Integrations' own 900 V and 1250 V devices launched in 2023. The 1700 V InnoMux-2 ICs easily support nominal input voltages of 1000 V DC in flyback operation and achieve efficiencies of over 90% in applications requiring power on one, two or three rails. Each output is accurately controlled to within 1% and eliminates the need for post regulators, improving system efficiency by approximately 10%. The new devices replace expensive silicon carbide (SiC) transistors used in power supplies such as on-board chargers, solar inverters, three-phase meters and various industrial power systems.
"Our rapid pace of GaN development has delivered three world firsts in less than two years: 900 V, 1250 V and now 1700 V," said Radu Barsan, Power Integrations' vice president of technology. "Our new InnoMux-2 ICs combine 1700 V GaN with three other latest innovations: independent and precise control of multiple output rails; FluxLink™, our secondary-side regulator (SSR) digitally isolated communications technology; and zero-voltage switching (ZVS) without active clamping, which almost completely eliminates switching losses."
"The 1700 V rating is significantly higher than any other commercially available GaN HEMT that we are aware of," said Ezgi Dogmus, Activity Manager, Compound Semiconductors, Yole Group . "The market for GaN power devices is expected to reach $2 billion by the end of the 2020s, and they offer a potentially attractive cost advantage over SiC, which is driving their adoption across a range of applications."(1)
