WAUKEGAN, ILLINOIS, December 2000 -- In a strategic initiative to build machine tool market share, Yaskawa Electric Corporation has created a 50-50 joint venture with Siemens. This joint venture, Yaskawa-Siemens Numerical Control (YSNC), will pursue machine tool business in Japan and Korea.
Yaskawa is the world's largest supplier of AC servomotors, inverters and robotics. Siemens is the world's second largest supplier of CNC controls. Together, in this initiative, they will reshape the CNC control system world market.
The parent companies have concentrated their Japan-based CNC development, sales and application engineering personnel in YSNC, headquartered in Yaskawa facilities at Iruma, near Tokyo. Mr. Eiichi Nakao, with senior level experience in Siemens and Fanuc, was named President. The first official day of operation was October 23, 2000.
YSNC will focus sales efforts with a new high-end CNC, the Yaskawa-Siemens 840DI. This new control incorporates machine control technologies from both parent companies, including Yaskawa's well-respected high-speed control architecture and know-how. New, high performance servo drives for this control, developed by Yaskawa, are designated the K-series. Yaskawa will also manufacture the spindle drives and motors. The first version of the system was introduced at JIMTOF 2000, the Japanese machine tool show, in Tokyo this November.
Yaskawa Electric Corporation retains the YASNAC CNC trademark and continues to manufacture YASNAC controls including the YASNAC PC NC, an economical, high-performance open architecture control that improves the productivity of standard machining centers.
Yaskawa Electric America (YEA) will continue marketing and developing the YASNAC PC NC products. Engineering resources of Yaskawa Electric Corporation, YSNC and YEA will contribute to future CNC developments. YEA's objective is to increase market penetration in North America and other areas.
YEA and Siemens USA may market the Yaskawa-Siemens 840DI control or other new YSNC products as they evolve. YEA will provide primary after sales service in North America for all such systems, servos and spindles. Yaskawa will continue to provide worldwide support for all YASNAC controls. Siemens will continue to support SINUMERIK controls.
